PANASONIC Manila Fashion Festival Season 9 - The Young Guns: MARK TAMAYO

Here’s one forecast from the Panasonic Fashion Festival Season 9 presentations that we can all be excited about: the future of Philippine fashion is bright and exuberant. And here are the young designers, describing their Spring/Summer 2019 collections in their own words, capably taking their creativity to the forefront of the fashion battlefield.

My “Chameleon” 2019 Artisan Collection drew inspiration from the diverse cultural heritage of the African continent, paying particular homage to the jungles of Africa, the deserts of Namibia, Ethiopia’s Omo Valley and Dinka of Southern Sudan. Every piece is an imaginative representation of the legendary cattle keepers of Sudan, of the headpieces and painted faces of the inhabitants of Omo Valley, and the meticulously sculpted bodies of West Africans due to Scarification, a permanent body modification that transforms the texture and appearance of the skin’s surface. I used cotton, custom embroidery, suiting wool cotton and textured organdy silk in neutral earth tones of black, ecru, grey, nude, red, rust orange, and white will abound. Construction and execution is tailored and yet trendy, cutting-edge and ready-to-wear, with touches of asymmetric lines, and a dash of texturized and embossed elements, all of which are organic to my design aesthetics.
